- Betsey Johnson couldn’t pay a $48.8 million loan. Last month, Steve Madden took over the loan, and took as collateral the totality of the company’s intellectual property. Given Steve Madden is a knock-off specialist and a white-collar criminal, this seemed like a really sad turn of events for Betsey Johnson. Then her business partner of over 30 years quit. Now, Madden has announced that in exchange for his forgiveness of the loan, he will take outright ownership of the company. He says of that last one: “I went to see this movie with Grace Mirabella. Meryl Streep‘s character is loosely based on Anna Wintour, who replaced Grace at Vogue under dreadful circumstances. Grace was as still as a statue during the movie, which made me nervous. When the lights came up at the end, I slowly turned to Grace, whose eyes met mine. I gulped.
