Surgeons in Baltimore successfully removed a woman’s kidney through her vagina last Thursday. Hospital officials believe that this may be the first transvaginal removal of a kidney destined for donation.

Kimberly Johnson, 48, donated her kidney to her 23-year-old niece. Doctors say that this is not the first time a organ has been removed from the body via the vagina, but usually the technique is not usually used for organ donors. Johnson said her surgery was “easier than childbirth,” and left her with only two pea-sized scars. [MSNBC]
