Blow Your Entire Afternoon Designing Elaborate 18th Century Wigs

In Depth

More than anything else, late eighteenth century European fashion is famous for ludicrous wigs. Sky-high, powdered, stuffed with ribbons and flowers and whatever trendy, topical confection they could shove in there. And now you can create your own!

The Victoria and Albert Museum, famous for its decorative arts collection, has a wonderful new toy on its website, which we saw via Monica McLaughlin. It’s a “design a wig” tool, affording you the opportunity to build your own Marie Antoinette-style monstrosity. First you comb out the hair; then you festoon it with decorations—flowers, streamers, feathers, a ship; then you powder it.

It is very simple and also extremely addictive. I cannot

making

these

wigs.

Enjoy!
