Yesterday during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, ladies from around the world competed in the women's short program figure skating. This involved strapping on shoes encumbered by sharp blades and leaping up over a solid sheet of ice. Terrifying, beautiful, courageous.

Check out these images of the women caught mid-jump — and often face-down — hovering above the rock-hard unforgiving frozen stage, while the whole world watches.

Semi-tangential aesthetic question: is anyone a fan of the hose-over-skate nude illusion look? Personally, I think the white skates look so crisp and fresh, especially with the usually bright-coloured outfits, that I don't really understand why they do this...but that's just my taste.

Any skaters around to weigh in on this? Does this lend support or something, or is it purely an aesthetic thing?
