Alabama Governor Defunds Planned Parenthood

Latest

On Thursday, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley announced he would cut off all state funding for Planned Parenthood by ending an agreement between the organization and the Alabama Medicaid Agency.

In the official termination letter, however, Bentley’s office did not specify which services would be affected by the decision.

Al.com reports:

The letter says that the Alabama Medicaid Agency is exercising its ability to terminate its provider contract with Planned Parenthood with a 15-day notice. The letter says that if Planned Parenthood opposes the decision it has 60 days to apply for a fair hearing.

Planned Parenthood gets 75 percent of its yearly $500 million in government funding from Medicaid.

On Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell attempted to discourage outspoken GOP senators including Ted Cruz from pushing to defund the organization with a government spending bill.
