A Shifting Oscar de la Renta Gave Us Some Solid Casual Wedding Dress Options

Entertainment

The normally consistent Oscar de la Renta show was a bit off this year, likely owing to the fact that the design house is between designers—Peter Copping stepped down in July, and Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, of buzzy New York-based label Monse, will step in for the Fall 2017 collection.

“All the boxes were checked as far as familiar shapes and standard house fabrications, and now there’s a collection to sell. Voilà. Onto the next,” read Jessica Iredale’s dry review for Women’s Wear Daily. I agree: the styling was bland, the models seemed dour, the setting uninspiring; there wasn’t a lot of cohesion. But! Although this wasn’t technically a bridal collection, if you’re trying to get married in front of 50 friends in your parents’ backyard, or, like, at sunset in Joshua Tree, there was a handful of pretty nice low-key options:

Far left is my favorite, with the sheer paneling and unfussy hemline. Next, a lovely plain column is always a great option for certain body types; this last one, I’m afraid, is not flattering even on this very thin amazon, but the flowy idea of it is great.

Again: these are nice! The overly-embellished sandals are slightly off and kind of fuck up the vibe, but with these looks I can imagine a variety of I’m-Not-Trying-To-Make-A-Big-Deal-Out-Of-My-Wedding weddings (in a friend’s garden, a last-minute Vegas situation).

There were a few good non-white options, as well. A gorgeous, floaty origami look, for example:

And a crinkly ‘80s prom moment:

Not sure how any of this stuff was supposed to make sense together, but hey—I enjoyed it.
