Hear The Cat Who Purrs As Loud As A Lawnmower

Latest

Ruth and Mark Adams of Northampton, England claim their 12-year-old cat Smokey can purr as loud as 92 decibels, which is what you’d experience while watching a 737 land. While most cats only purr at 25 decibels, Smokey’s purr can drown out the TV or phone conversations.

In addition to being loud, Smokey also makes noise constantly. “She even manages to purr while she eats. The only time she is quiet is when she is asleep,” Ruth tells the Daily Mail. “It’s either adorable or annoying, depending on what mood you’re in. You don’t even have to stroke her to start a purring session. Often she’ll do it for no reason.”

The owners have released this video of Smokey’s “cooing purr” (Turn your speakers up for the full effect):

Guinness World Records does have a category for “noisiest cat,” but no feline has ever claimed the title. A spokesman said, “If Smokey can purr at over 80dB it would be an astonishing feat,” so it sounds like if she speaks up, the honor will be hers.
