The U.S. State Department announced yesterday that sexual reassignment surgery will no longer be required in order to get gender changed on passports. However, the applicant still must prove that they have undergone treatment for gender transition. [CNN]

Somebody on the CNN comments brings up an interesting/troubling point (even if it's worded snottily)...

Well, good luck going to foreign countries whose passport control officials might not understand this US passport policy—or worse, perhaps they will be directed by their competent authorities to disregard what they see as a suspicious policy and detain those whose physiological gender does not equal that which is labeled on the passport.
