Won't You Please, Won't You Please? Cry with Me Through the Won't You Be My Neighbor Trailer?

Entertainment

How far will you make it into the trailer for this documentary about Fred Rogers before you start tearing up? I’d estimate that I made it a full minute, but I’m perhaps being generous.

Focus Features just released the trailer for Won’t You Be My Neighbor?—on what would have been Rogers’s 90th birthday, as EW points out. Deadline says:

The Focus Features documentary, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom), is described by Focus as an intimate look at America’s favorite neighbor: Mister Fred Rogers. The logline reads: A portrait of a man whom we all think we know, this emotional and moving film takes us beyond the zip-up cardigans and the land of make-believe, and into the heart of a creative genius who inspired generations of children with compassion and limitless imagination.

The trailer gives prominent place to Rogers’s thoughts on love: “Love is at the root of everything—all learning, all parenting, all relationships, love. Or the lack of it. And what we see and hear on the screen is part of who we become.” I’m genuinely shaken by Mr. Rogers even mentioning the notion of “the lack of” love. Limited release starts June 8.
