A 21-year-old refugee from Syria has been arrested in Germany after using a machete to kill one woman and injure two others.
The attack took place Sunday afternoon in the small town of Reutlingen, and though the assailant’s name has not been released, he was apparently known to police, the New York Times reports:
The attacker acted alone, and “based on what we know at this time, the citizens of Reutlingen face no further danger,” the police said in a statement hours after the attack.
The motive for the attack is unclear, though the German paper Stuttgarter Zeitung reports that both the perpetrator and the victim were employed at the same restaurant, and that the suspect drew the blade following an argument.
The newspaper Bild reports that the victim was also pregnant.
“The attacker was completely out of his mind. He even ran after a police car with his machete,” a witness said. Police were able to arrest the suspect after a passing driver ran him over with a BMW, injuring him.
This has been an especially tragic week for Germany. On Friday, a teenager murdered nine people in a Munich shopping mall, and another attacked passengers on a train with an axe in Bavaria, wounding five.
