We're Getting a Rom-Com From Phoebe Waller-Bridge That Is Also a Thriller

Latest

Fans of Fleabag and romantic comedy tinged with danger have a new show to look forward to developed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Waller-Bridge will be executive producing a new series titled Run described as “part romantic comedy, part thriller” with her producing partner Vicky Jones. The two have a production banner called DryWrite, but this is the first television series under the name, which usually produces theater.

The story follows two former lovers who have a secret pact: if one ever texts the other the phrase “run,” they must drop everything and scamper away from their lives. Waller-Bridge is slated for a recurring role, though they don’t confirm if she is one of the escape artists. Jones will be penning the script, and the whole thing is set to air on eOne.

A Waller-Bridge’s take on romantic comedy tropes is innately promising: She notably specializes in the “unlikeable woman,” a type we don’t often get to see in rom-coms, where the most damning character trait the lady protagonist can possess is “quirkiness.” Plus, we’re being promised a side of thrills, so I am personally anticipating rooting for a murderer or some other conscienceless monster. A monster in love, perchance?
