Vermont's State Bird Might as Well Be a Cat Because Those Muhfuckers Are Crazy About Cats

The rankings from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) are in and this year’s state with the most cats per capita is…drumroll, please…Vermont! Vermont’s previous accomplishments include the production of not-as-good-as-Wisconsin cheese and Brigham Young. Congratulations, Vermont, land of freedom and unity where 49% of households have a pet cat.

Other top ranking cat states include Maine, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, West Virginia, Kentucky, Idaho, Indiana and New Hampshire. The states with the lowest number of cats as pets are California, South Carolina, Rhode Island, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, New Jersey and Utah.

As for dogs (who according to the 1993 documentary Homeward Bound, drool as opposed to rule), the top states were Arkansas with 47.9 percent of households owning a dog, followed by New Mexico, Kentucky, Missouri, West Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, and Oklahoma. Lowest ranking dog-owning states were Illinois, New Jersey, Minnesota, Maryland, New Hampshire, Utah, Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts at the very bottom with 23.6 percent.
