The British Academy Film Awards, perhaps better known as the BAFTAs, or “the British Oscars,” are taking place in London this evening, and the stars are out in full force, wearing their glamorous awards-season best:
I really, really love yellow on the red carpet, as I think it’s always quite striking and unique, yet I’m not sure if Anna Kendrick’s gown is formal enough for the event. What do you think?
I’m confused by Carey Mulligan’s dress, as well, though I think she pulls it off. It’s very Tilda Swinton-esque, no?
Joely Richardson keeps it simple and goes for old-school glam.
It’s sort of impossible to screw up the dude side of things at these events, unless you show up in a blue leisure suit with greasy hair or some such. That said, Jeremy Renner still looks extremely sharp.
Kristen Scott-Thomas gown is ridiculously elegant…
Though she arrived wearing some fur-cape combo thingie that was very Disney Villain, you know? Maleficent chic?
Romola Garai’s ensemble and retro hairdo are adorable, but again, I’m not sure if the look is formal enough for this type of awards show.
White seems to be a hot color on the red carpet this year, as evidenced by Vera Farmiga’s flowy goddess-type gown.
Kristen Stewart showed up in white, as well. I may have told you guys this story before, but when I was a junior in high school, I was talked into going to the prom, even though I was still getting over a nasty case of mono. My expression in the majority of those prom pictures is the exact expression Kristen Stewart makes whenever she’s on the red carpet. Like, “What am I doing here? Ugh. I don’t want to be here. This is the worst. I’d rather be home eating pudding and watching Golden Girls reruns.”
Saoirse Ronan, by contrast, came to the ball ready to party.
Olivia Williams’ ensemble feels a bit busy, doesn’t it?
Audrey Tautou could have shown up in sweatpants and a trash bag and still looked absolutely adorable, so it’s no surprise that she looks radiant in her pink gown. I love the red shoes, too.
Gollum cleans up nice, eh?
Sorry, ladies, but Colin Firth is taken…
..and Clive Owen is, too.
I know most people probably recognize Nicholas Hoult from Skins, but to me he will always be the adorable kid from About A Boy, so it’s still weird for me to see him looking so grown up and dashing.
Gabby Sidibe’s shimmery gown shows a little leg…
…and Kate Winslet’s slinky black number does as well.
Meanwhile, Claire Danes’ shimmery gown falls all the way to the floor.

Honestly, I don’t know what to think about Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, here. I’m not a fan of bow-tie tuxes on a man unless he’s James Bond or heading to the prom, I guess.
Though after seeing Stanley Tucci in his, I might have to reconsider. Dashing!
I don’t know when it happened, or why, but I swear that Quentin Tarantino and Robin Williams are slowly morphing into the same person.
In any case, my favorite outfit of the night was probably Jane Goldman’s, mostly because I think she had to trade her voice to Ursula in order to buy it. Poor, unfortunate souls! So sad! So true!
