Teen Tries to Take Pic With Bison, Gets Gored

A Taiwanese exchange student was on a trip to Yellowstone National Park with her host family when they spotted a bison next to their hiking trail. The 16-year-old girl had her back turned from the animal for a photo when it moved forward a couple of steps and gored her. Perhaps like Oprah, that bison felt it was about to enter “selfie hell.”

Park rangers immediately took the teen to their on-site clinic before having her airlifted via helicopter to receive further medical treatment. The girl’s injuries are serious, but not life-threatening according to CNN. While the Park Service advises visitors to stay at least 25 yards from bison, the girl and other visitors were only three to six feet from the animal.

Please, please, please keep your distance from bison. My partner sucks it up and becomes That Annoying Wyomingite all the time and scolds people at the park, because there is just so much idiocy on display around these animals. They are not tamed, they are huge, and they can move very, very quickly (which nobody seems to realize). Most importantly: do not assume that what you’re doing is okay or safe just because other tourists are doing it. I’ve seen it happen tons of times: one person does something dumb, then thirty more follow. Exercise some critical thought; 25 yards should not be rounded down to 25 feet, let alone three.
