Older women who lift weights can improve cognitive function, says a new study. Women aged 65-75 showed a marked improvement on tests after a year of strength training, but the group that focused on toning exercises did not. [NYT]
And yet, in my experience, they will push women away from strength training and towards cardio. I had to really fight with a personal trainer to get her to work with me on the weight machines. She finally did it this morning, but I've been working with her since November (off and on). I don't think she was against it, but she just assumed that I wanted to do cardio and wasn't listening to what my real goals were.
