What a fun and great project for everyone to be focusing their time and energy on!

Here’s all the shit we couldn’t cover today:

  • “This is a revolutionary change, and the biggest winners will be middle class workers as jobs start pouring into our country, as companies start competing for American labor, and as wages continue to grow,” Donald Trump said about his tax plan, which he has certainly read and understands very well. As the Times writes, it seems like maybe the exact opposite is true: “The president offered few details about how working people might benefit from a plan that has explicit and substantial rewards for wealthy people and corporations, including the elimination of taxes on large inheritances and deep reductions in the rates paid by businesses large and small.” And really, what better time to give massive tax breaks to rich people and corporations than during a horrifyingly large-scale ongoing humanitarian disaster in multiple US territories? [New York Times]
  • Speaking of that, there’s significant confusion over whether Trump will waive the Jones Act, an obscure maritime law that blocks foreign vessels from bringing aid to Puerto Rico. It was waived during hurricanes Irma and Harvey, but as Trump very explicitly put it, “We have a lot of shippers and a lot of people... who work in the shipping industry that don’t want the Jones Act lifted. And we have a lot of ships out there right now.” [WSJ]
  • The president is “not happy” that HHS director Tom Price, who is pushing major cuts to his department, used taxpayer dollars to shuttle himself around the country on a private jet. [Washington Post]
  • The Trump administration is cutting refugee admissions to 45,000, the lowest cap ever set. [The Hill]
