Rumors, Concern Continue To Swirl In Porn Valley After Positive HIV Test

Since the porn industry testing agency has not released the name or partner of the performer who tested positive for HIV over privacy concerns, his or her colleagues continue to worry about their health. And rumors are running rampant

The latest rumor, following a report on AVN.com, is that the performer who first tested positive is a man who appears in both gay and straight productions. Although (and possibly because) it is de rigueur for performers in gay male porn to wear condoms, the studios that produce those films do not require regular testing. Straight performers, as has been widely reported (and seen, if you watch professional porn) rarely wear condoms but are required to be tested every 30 days.

Performer Angela Aspen told the LA Times:

“We’re not mad at the dudes. We’re mad at their industry not requiring testing,” Aspen said. “We have to get tested every 28 days. There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it.…We want accountability for the other side.”

The test results have spurred renewed calls for the state of California to require porn productions to utilize barrier protection during filming, which in turn has spurred some in the industry to claim (as it always does) that customers don’t like to see condoms during sex scenes. Some performers, like Nina Hartley, claim that latex condoms are too irritating given production requirements.

In the mean time, someone is facing a lifetime illness and the end of his or her career, and hundreds of people worry that they might be next.
