Oscar Pistorius Will Be Released on Parole After 10 Months in Jail

Latest

After being sentenced in October to five years in prison for the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, the parole board at the South African prison he’s incarcerated in has recommended that Oscar Pistorius be released on parole in August.

The AP reports that the recommendation was made because of Pistorius’s good behavior in prison, and that any more information about the details of his parole will not be shared. The prosecution isn’t letting Pistorius go quietly, however; the BBC reports that South African Supreme Court of Appeal will hear the state’s argument for appealing the dismissal of his intentional murder charge in November. (Pistorius was found guilty for culpable murder.)

A lawyer for Steenkamp’s parents told the BBC that the family is “shocked” Pistorius is leaving prison, adding that 10 months is “not enough for taking a life”.
