Open Thread: Did Paris Hilton Invent the Selfie?

Putting aside the selfies from the dawn of photography, like this and this and this, let’s take a serious look at this possibly historic claim. Today, Paris Hilton made a stunning assertion:

“11 years ago today, Me & Britney invented the selfie!”

Does she mean “I invented the selfie,” as in George Costanza saying “I invented ‘it’s not you, it’s me’”? Or did she mean “I invented the selfie” as in Thomas Edison saying “I invented the light bulb”?

Can anybody find a selfie, a cell phone photo taken at arm’s length, dated prior to November 19th, 2006?

Serious submissions only.

You know what, yes. I believe this. I think that’s fair on her part to proclaim herself selfie inventor. Paris Hilton is the first person I can personally remember to kick start this narcissistic, famous for the sake of being famous, conspicuous consumption rollercoaster we’ve “enjoyed” the last decade or so. The Kardashians may have perfected it but Paris started it. Thanks Paris?
