A Las Vegas nail salon owner was killed over a $35 manicure after a customer who fled without paying hit her with a stolen rental car.

Nhu “Annie” Ngoc Quynh Nguyen, a Vietnamese refugee, gave a manicure to am unidentified female customer on Saturday; when the woman attempted to pay with a credit card, it was declined. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the customer claimed she was going to go retrieve the money from her car:

Nguyen called [her partner] Chung over and the couple followed the woman outside to try to stop her from leaving. The glass in the back window of the black, newer-model Chevrolet Camaro, which police have said was a rental car, was broken out, and Nguyen tried to hold on to the frame of the rear windshield, near the trunk, Chung said.
“My wife ran out and tried to stop her, and then she rolled forward,” he said of the woman in the car.

Police said the driver hit Nguyen and dragged her before fleeing the area.

A GoFundMe page describes Nguyen as a single mother of three girls who “had been constantly putting in 12-14 hrs a day, 7 days a week to send her daughters to college and to support her mother, siblings, and grandchildren.”

Nguyen’s death has been ruled a homicide.
