Miley Cyrus Bashes Urban Outfitters For Knock-Offs And Anti-Gay Politics

Latest

Well, this is unexpected and refreshing! Miley Cyrus got all het up on the Twitter about…Urban Outfitters. “Not only do they steal from artists,” she wrote in an update tagged #SHADYASHELL, “but every time you give them money you help finance a campaign against gay equality.” Could the singer have been referring to this specific instance, or to Urban Outfitters’ long history of shady dealings with other people’s intellectual property? Then she wrote: “‘IF WE ALLOW GAY MARRIAGE THEN NEXT THING U KNOW PEOPLE WILL BE MARRYING GOLD FISH’ – Rick Santorum UO contributed $13,000 to this mans [sic] campaign.” Actually, it was $13,150. More recently, Urban Outfitters company president and founder Richard Hayne and his wife have given $2,250 to Texas senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, who rates a 0 from NARAL Pro-Choice American and voted against financial reform because, “The problem was not mainstream banks. We need to make sure that we don’t over-regulate the mainstream banks so they can’t loan to small business.” Miley again: “Love that everyone is hating on Urban Outfitters.” [@MileyCyrus]

Every year the Council of Fashion Designers of America commissions portraits of the designers it nominates for its awards. This year, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin did the honors. They wanted to shoot all the nominees naked, but that idea was (unfortunately?) nixed. [WWD]

  • BCBG is experiencing financial trouble severe enough that it hasn’t paid some of its bills since February. The company sent a letter to its creditors last week announcing it was “suspending” all payments “pending completion of new financing arrangements,” reports Women’s Wear Daily. BCBG is struggling to secure a $230 million loan in order to refinance a portion of its debt — otherwise, a $94 million loan will come due on June 16. And this looks bad: “BCBG did not respond to requests for comment. BCBG’S public relations representative sent out an e-mail Thursday saying she had resigned.” Maybe because she hadn’t been paid since February? Just a guess. [WWD]
  • The Olsen twins (try to) explain that whole bag-lady chic thing: “That moment for us was us waking up, going to school, and not wanting anyone to take our picture. Kind of a piece of protection,” says Ashley. “For me, it was so cold, like the wind chill. How could you not put on 20 things when you’re going from Los Angeles to walking through the snow? I think it was probably that. And laziness.” The rest of this interview is quite interesting — don’t let that be the only quote you read from it. [Style.com]
  • Michael Angel now says he did not design Gwen Stefani’s dress for the amfAR gala, and that it was indeed a “collaboration” between them. Earlier, Angel’s office had confirmed that the dress, which Stefani attempted to pass off as her own original design for L.A.M.B., had been in fact designed by Angel. Sounds like a powerful celebrity asked someone to toe the line, and he relented. [The Cut]

She herself was once screamed at because a dog biscuit destined for the maw of Carolina Herrera’s pooch broke in two inside a bag she’d packed during a long car journey, but it was like totally the best thing that ever happened to her! “Jobs that are painful and abusive–not physically where someone is punching you or throwing you up against the wall obviously-–but verbally abusive and are completely insane are your best jobs.
