Michelle Obama aptly summed up the state of United States politics on Sunday, while in London to promote her memoir Becoming. She compared Donald Trump to a divorced dad—and implicitly, compared Trump supporters to excitable children who mistakenly thought spaghetti for breakfast every day wouldn’t get old. (The spaghetti in this scenario is white people’s enthusiasm for racism.)

“We come from a broken family, we are a little unsettled,” Obama said, according to The Independent. “Sometimes you spend the weekend with divorced dad. That feels like fun but then you get sick. That is what America is going through. We are living with divorced dad.”

This feels rude to divorce dads, but I understand her point. You can’t choose your family, but you can choose the next president, and that, if nothing else, is a reminder to vote! Just not for Divorced Dad.

Trump does remind me of the divorced dad of a schoolmate I have known since we were five. He tormented her mother until she left him. Then he pulled every dirty trick in the book to gain custody of my schoolmate. One such trick was painting the mother as an alcoholic (and after years with him she probably was) although he drank as much or more than she did, but in the late 70s/early 80s an alcoholic mother in the Bible Belt was a monster while an alcoholic dad was simply shrugged at. Then their house mysteriously burned down. He quit work, put a secondhand mobile home on the property, and lived off the insurance money until it was gone. All the while I’m pretty sure he was abusing his child in a variety of ways. Periodically, the mother would try to get custody but she never could in spite of the father’s highly shady and creepy behavior. Looking back at the good-old-boy network of the day, I really think the dad had some sort of incriminating stuff on the judge because many years later that judge had to resign under very odd circumstances that included multiple extramarital affairs and gambling. That’s Trump. I wish it was spaghetti for breakfast.

Sad extra: That old schoolmate of mine is now a religious zealot and hardcore “build the wall” trumper. Her dad, now deceased, would be proud.
