Mattel is reporting that sales of its new line of Ghostbusters toys—the ones based on the remake featuring all female leads—have been impressive among both boys and girls and “exceeded expectations.”

Among the line’s bestsellers are reportedly its action figures and Proton pack. Variety reports:

In keeping with the tagline “Everybody wants to be a Ghostbuster,” Mattel’s retail strategy was to sell the female-led Ghostbusters action figures in the boys’ toy aisle. The sales figures at the top retailers in the country have exceeded expectations, the toymaker reported Friday.

Amid close scrutiny, the film meanwhile grossed $46 million at the box office in its opening weekend.

Mattel’s senior VP of design and marketing, Joe Lawandus, says of the toy sales, “The early momentum shows the product is resonating with Ghostbusters fans.” Also, saying they’re doing well is a good way to push more sales along.

I’m more surprised that Mattel is actually surprised by this.

Do they not think girls buy toys? (Or their parents?) Why WOULDN’T they want to buy toys with more female representation? It’s always shocking when they fail to make toys for female superheroes, like what happened with the Avengers. You realize you’re cutting out half your market, right?

Or maybe boys just buy more toys because they need replacements after they melt them all?
