Mary J. Blige has reportedly filed for divorce from her husband of 12 years, Kendu Isaacs, citing irreconcilable differences.
As part of the divorce proceedings, according to TMZ, Blige, 45, “is asking the judge to block Isaacs’ ability to get spousal support. The document does not say if there is a prenup.”
The couple married in 2003 and were at some points plagued with rumors about their marriage being in jeopardy. Blige has always been candid about her previous toxic relationships and how Isaacs saved her. He also served as her manager over the years. In a 2007 interview with Parade magazine, she talked about the early parts of their relationship and admitted to treating Isaacs “so badly for a while, because I’d never experienced real love before. I was suspicious. It seemed too good to be true.”
Blige was compelled to respond to breakup reports in 2012, telling Wendy Williams, “My marriage is not on the rocks, but I would be a liar and my fans would hate me if I said to them, ‘Oh, we’re perfect and everything is great.’ We have situations just like everyone else. We’re not out in public trying to kill each other, but it’s real. We love each other.”
At another point in 2014, Blige had to clarify a statement she made to Stella magazine about restricting her husband from having friends of the opposite sex. MJB told Wendy Williams during a 2014 appearance, “There was more said than that. That thing was taken totally out of context. He’s had friends before he’s known me. And I know all of his female friends. They’re like his sisters so we’re all family. But any of these new chicks and all of this new stuff...And if they are new, we’ll all make friends. We’ll all be friends.”
