Enjoy a picture of marathon runners doing something practical and useful for a change. From Gawker:

Here's a mob of New York City Marathon runners packed into the Staten Island ferry terminal. There's no race today, instead, they're all going to help out with relief efforts in the battered borough.

DISCUSSION

Runners are generally very nice people. I was really pleased that they decided to help rather than just be miffy about the race cancellation. The race definitely should have been cancelled(!), it's just a shame they waited so long. 36 hours before start time is too tight, IMO.

I'm sure that all the sleeping, brunch eating, etc non-runners are doing while we're up ass early to toe a start line isn't super useful either. I know my non-race weekend mornings aren't exactly a paragon of practicality and usefulness (breakfast, tea, internets forever!) At least races raise money for charities! ;)
