In an interview for a People Entertainment Network feature entitled “Surviving A Father’s Addiction: Lamar Odom’s Family Speaks Out,” 18-year-old Destiny Odom spoke publicly about her father’s 2015 overdose for the first time.
In the wrenching video, Destiny describes the pain of seeing her father in the Nevada hospital where he was admitted. “We all thought... he was going to pass away,” she says. But Odom didn’t, and once he defied their expectations with a full recovery, she and her brother staged an intervention. “I basically gave him the ultimatum that it was rehab or him not speaking to me anymore,” Destiny says. He chose rehab.
Though she doesn’t spent too much time discussing his father’s most high-profile marriage, which lasted from 2009 to 2016 (though she filed for divorce in 2013), Destiny does describe her father as being “addicted” to the attention he got with Khloe, and calls their relationship “toxic.”
But this video isn’t really about Khloe goss (there’s plenty of that everywhere else on the internet), it’s about Lamar’s ever-improving relationship with his family. Destiny describes her father as “more clear” and “apologetic” since finishing his stint in rehab. “He’s able to see the pain he’s caused,” she says. “When your parent’s an addict and they get clean, it’s like a whole new world. A whole new person.”
