The Sex and the City sequel drama continues to unravel before our very eyes like a loose thread on a voluminous Vera Wang wedding gown for a wedding that never happened.
Last week, The Daily Mail published a story in which unnamed sources cited Kim Cattrall’s alleged inconsiderate demands as the reason for the Sex and the City 3 production shutdown.
Cattrall immediately denied the “diva” accusations in a tweet, saying that the only demand she ever made was to not do that wretched (my word) sequel. As much as others have pushed to make it happen, Cattrall says she’s been trying to save us from a sequel since 2016.
“The answer was always no and a respectful, firm, no,” Cattrall said in a recent interview with human swamp monster Piers Morgan. “It’s quite extraordinary to get any kind of negative press about something that I’ve been saying for almost a year of ‘no’ that I’m demanding or a diva.” She adds, “I never asked for any money, I never asked for any projects. To be thought of as some kind of diva is absolutely ridiculous.”
The public didn’t even know this movie was actually happening and now we know far too much about it. To rehash: Cattrall does not want to do a Sex and the City 3, despite multiple attempts to get her on board (a similar plight as the Olsen Twins and Fuller House).
Guess you could say she wanted to three her way out.
“Last December I got a phone call and it was concerning that,” says Cattrall. “And the answer was simply, ‘Thank you, but no, I’m good.’” In fact, she’s had to decline these people many times.
Cattrall says she went to Sweden and got another call:
‘I went off to Sweden to do this fantastic fun job, I get a call in Sweden and what I hear then is, “but we just want to talk about it a little bit,” I said, “thank you very much, I’m very flattered but thank you, no.”
And she got another request in New York:
‘Months go by, I finish filming, I come back to New York [they say] “we believe that the period of time you have spent connected to this franchise you really should sit down with one of the creators and they can talk to you about, just talk to you about it.” And I thought to myself, I already know the answer,’ said Cattrall.
There’s more to this. Sarah Jessica Parker confirmed the death of the sequel to Extra TV last week, stating, “It’s over… we’re not doing it. I’m disappointed. We had this beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable script and story. It’s not just disappointing that we don’t get to tell the story and have that experience, but more so for that audience that has been so vocal in wanting another movie.”
It’s too bad they wrote a script with Samantha Jones scenes without Samantha Jones participation. Guess you could say Cattrall screwed everyone and put the nail in this coffin.
Cattrall personally doesn’t like how Parker handled the situation. “This is really where I take to task the people from Sex and the City and specifically Sarah Jessica Parker in that I think she could have been nicer. I really think she could have been nicer. I don’t know what her issue is, I never have.”
“I never have” is the part that suggests deeper tension. At the least, the cast has grown apart, and Cattrall says she doesn’t hang out or speak to the other women because “the common ground that we had was the series and the series is over.”
‘And that’s another thing that’s really disappointing is that nobody ever picks up the phone and tries to contact you and say, “how you doing?” That would have been the way to handle it,’ said Cattrall.
‘And usually what happens in a healthy relationship is that someone, or a transaction for a job in my business, is that someone says, “are you available?” and you say “yes” and here’s the job and you say “yes but thank you very much but I’m sort of over here right now but thank you very much” and that person turns to you and they say “that’s great, good luck to you, I wish you the best.” ‘
Cattrall then noted: ‘That’s not what happened here, this is, it feels like a toxic relationship.”
The point is that Cattrall has clearly moved on from the SATC timeline and insists it’s not about money or wanting extra screen time. “This is about a clear decision, an empowered decision in my life to end one chapter and start another. I’m 61. It’s now,” she says, adding that she will never play Samantha Jones again. “For me it’s over, it’s over with no regrets.”

But Cattrall has no problem with the sequel moving forward without her. She even suggests, “Maybe they could make it an African American Samantha Jones or a Hispanic Samantha Jones?”
