Jeff Sessions Is Still Here

This is the future liberals want.

Here’s all the shit we couldn’t cover today:

  • Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that he will remain at his job despite Donald Trump’s assertion that he would not have nominated Sessions if he had known that the former Alabama Senator was going to recuse himself from the ongoing investigation into possible collusion with Russia. “If he would have recused himself before the job, I would have said, ‘Thanks, Jeff, but I can’t, you know, I’m not going to take you.’ It’s extremely unfair, and that’s a mild word,” Trump said during an interview. And yet, despite Trump’s lack of confidence in Sessions, he will persist. In a press conference, Sessions said he had the “honor of serving as attorney general,” and added that he would stay in the position, “as long as that is appropriate.” In short, Jeff Sessions will continue to work with a president who publicly insults and diminishes him even after he willfully displayed some rather convenient memory lapses on behalf of that president. In other news, “Jeff Sessions Fired by Trump” will be a front page headline in the not-to0-distant future. [Washington Post]
  • In a briefing, Sarah Sanders confirmed that Trump was “disappointed” in Sessions. “As the president said yesterday, he was disappointed in Attorney General Sessions’s decision to recuse himself. But clearly, he has confidence in him or he would not be the attorney general,” Sanders said. [Politico]
  • Only Hope Hicks knew that Trump had agreed to the interview with the New York Times. [Politico]
  • Senators Kamala Harris and Rand Paul, the world’s oddest pair, have introduced a bill that would incentivize states to remove the requirement of a cash bail as a necessity for pretrial release. In an op-ed co-written by Harris and Paul, they called the requirement “discriminatory and wasteful.” [Talking Points Memo]
  • Meanwhile, Paul also said that he would support the House version of the Republican health care bill. He also indicated that he would also support a full repeal of Obamacare. [The Hill]
  • If you weren’t already confused by the current state of the Republican health care bill (bills, since there are multiple proposals circulating), then let me add to your confusion. Today, the White House released a report showing that the Cruz Amendment would lower the cost of healthcare insurance. That report was deeply misleading. As Sarah Kliff writes, the Trump administration’s report, “suggests a partisan motivation in how it displays data and little interest in transparency.” [Vox]
  • But if you’re confused, so is the Senate. “Things are starting to feel very incoherent,” Republican Senator Bob Corker said today. Truly the slogan for our era. [New York Times]
  • The Senate confirmed Christopher Wray as the new director of the FBI. [USA Today]
  • Robert Mueller is busy. [Bloomberg]
  • But he might find himself with some free time in the near future. [Washington Post]
  • Corey Lewandowski thinks Melania Trump is beautiful—just really, very beautiful. [Vogue]

Here are some tweets the President was allowed to publish:
