James Corden, Mariah Carey and Guests Wish You a Merry Christmas From Their Carpool Karaoke to Yours

Humanity’s capacity for reimagining the song “All I want For Christmas Is You” is a testament to our curiosity, our tenacity, and our eternal optimism that some day we’ll hit the high notes. Watch a bunch of celebrities try to touch the sun, then fall, charred, at Mariah Carey’s feet.

James Corden shared a very special edition of Carpool Karaoke on Thursday, featuring queen of secular Christmas, Mariah Carey. There were also some special guests that he’d been filming throughout the year so they could make a cameo in the best holiday song of all time. Those guests include Adele, Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Elton John, Chris Martin, Gwen Stefani, Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas, and alleged sexual assaulters, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Seeing who gets a vocalized line is a fun game. Based on this video, I’d guess that Gwen Stefani just doesn’t have the range.

Happily, Mariah Carey is there to really nail the octaves we need to conjure the Christmas spirit and, as always, she makes it look like she’s not even trying.

I posted this on another Mariah Carey thread, but I will post it again: Carey and Walter Afanasieff, the co-writers of “All I Want for Christmas is You,” have made an estimated $50 million since the song’s release. That a whole hell of a lot of money, even next to other top sellers like “Fairytale of New York” (for which Mr. MacGowan and Jem Finer make about £400,000 a year).
