Style god Jaden Smith doesn’t really need to explain why he wore a Batman costume to Kim and Kanye’s wedding last year—it’s art. But since people like to question genius, yes he does have a good reason for that.

In an interview with GQ published today, Jaden explained the Batman get-up (he also wore a similar costume to prom this year) to all the commoners out there, telling the mag:

“I wore the Batman suit to heighten my experience at the wedding and prom which was fun, but also at the wedding I felt as though I needed to protect everyone there and needed to have the proper gear to do so.”

Obviously. “Just because” would’ve been a great answer too.

Jaden, who names Batman, Robin and Kanye West as his style icons in the interview, also talks about what it takes to look like Jaden Smith on any given day. Not a whole lot of thought goes into his wardrobe in the morning, believe it or not.

He says (emphasis ours):

“First I roll over on the bed I built for myself and look at the ground. If there are clothes I wore from the previous day and they’re not too dirty, that’s what I put on.”

In May, Jaden wore a dress to prom with Hunger Games’ Amandla Stenberg.

He’s worn many dresses, in fact, and says of his style:

“I’m just expressing how I feel inside, which is really no particular way because everyday it changes how I feel about the world and myself, but I like wearing super drapey things so I can feel as though I’m a super hero, but don’t have to necessarily wear super hero costumes everyday.”

Oh yeah, on swerving:

How does one know when they’ve swerved too far?

Well you can get fined for swerving too hard so it’s tough. People may come up to you and say, “Can you not swerve so hard? I can’t concentrate over here.” Thats a way to know you’ve swerved too hard, but there are so many others.

We can all learn something here: wear whatever you want.
