DISCUSSION

I despised this book. I found it heavy-handed, self-congratulatory, inauthentic, and in the dialect-heavy chapters, utterly offensive and ridiculous. I know all about Stockett's upbringing, her reservations about telling a story that wasn't hers to tell, and her reasoning behind the narrative choices she made. I just think its telling that there is a big difference between who thinks she succeeded and who doesn't. I love Viola Davis and any time she's working is good for me, but count me out. Even the media coverage, as @the.bleach pointed out below, is focused on the white actresses. And so it goes. Read "Wench" by Dolen Perkins-Valdez instead. A moving and powerful book about a little-known aspect of the black experience in America...told by a black woman! No wonder you've probably never heard of it and the movie rights have yet to be optioned by Hollywood...
