Gugu Mbatha-Raw Plays a Pop Star on the Edge in Beyond The Lights

Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who was luminous in the title role of Amma Asante’s film Belle, has another project coming up: Beyond The Lights. She plays Noni Jean, an overly-sexualized pop star so fed up with the pressures of the industry, she finds herself about to jump off of a balcony.

As noted over on Women And Hollywood, Noni Jean is rescued by a handsome cop (played by Nate Parker), and they strike up a romance, but it seems as though Noni Jean’s stage mother (played by Minnie Driver) is not about to let her daughter step out of the spotlight.

The movie is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who also helmed Love and Basketball and The Secret Life of Bees, among other films, and should hit theaters in November.
