The gesture is presumably a congratulations for Rihanna’s selection for the Video Vanguard Award, to be presented to her at the MTV VMAs on Sunday. From Pitchfork:
The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award is the highest honor given at the VMAs. Past recipients include Kanye West, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Beastie Boys, Britney Spears, Madonna, and of course, Michael Jackson. Rihanna will open Sunday’s VMAs with her Video Vanguard Award performance.
