Diet Pepsi Will Soon Be Sans Aspartame

Latest

These days there are so many nutritional fads and anxieties—so many rules about what we should or shouldn’t eat, what’s healthy and what’s not—that worrying about the artificial sweetener aspartame seems almost… quaint. Retro, even, like polyester pantsuits. Well, it’ll soon be a thing of the past—in Diet Pepsi, at least.

CNBC reports that PepsiCo will be swapping the artificial sweetener out for “a blend of artificial sweeteners sucralose and acesulfame potassium.” Yum?

“Diet cola drinkers in the U.S. told us they wanted aspartame-free Diet Pepsi and we’re delivering,” said Seth Kaufman, senior vice president of Pepsi and Flavors Portfolio, PepsiCo North America Beverages, in a release. “We recognize that consumer demand is evolving and we’re confident that cola-lovers will enjoy the crisp, refreshing taste of this new product.”

“EAT MY DUST, COCA-COLA,” he did not add but might as well have.

Coke said they’re not currently planning to fiddle with Diet Coke, and “all of the beverages we offer and ingredients we use are safe.” Other than soda being generally terrible for you, of course.
