From now on anyone performing the National Anthem should write the line "O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming" on their hand. Last night Cyndi Lauper flubbed the line (which Christina Aguilera botched earlier this year) immediately after a moment of silence for the victims of 9/11 at the U.S. Open semi-finals. One tennis fan was so offended by Lauper's goof that he decided to yell "crackhead" during the performance. That definitely taught her a lesson on how to respect America.
I adore Cyndi, but woman, be a professional. Among my various freelance jobs, I teach people (out of the US, non-English speakers) how to give a speech/presentation in English. There's nothing wrong with having the text right in front of you. Just hide it in plain sight. And BTW, this happens all the time to teachers/performers/speakers, etc. "Ah, hell, I know this. I'll breeze through it".Wrong. If you're in a situation that stressful, always bring a cheat sheet.
