Colleges Buying .XXX Domain Names To Prevent University Branded Porn

Latest

With the launch of the .xxx domain, purveyors of porn are eagerly snapping up descriptive domains. But another type of entity entirely is showing its appetite for porn domains: colleges and universities. They’re not doing it so that it’s easier for their cash-strapped students to sell their bodies in order to fund their educations; they’re doing it to keep porn companies from launching Your University-themed smut sites.

The Washington Post reports that sites with a .xxx domain started being available for purchase this week. The new domain promises to be a godsend for firewall makers as well as masturbators concerned with efficiency, but it’s a nightmare for any prominent entity concerned that their name will be associated with porn. Universities find the potential affiliation especially worrisome.

The University of Kansas, for example, has already bought KUGirls.xxx and KUNurses.xxx. Several universities in Indiana have done the same, spending thousands and thousands of dollars to make sure that college is never ever associated with widespread irresponsible sexual behavior.

Bullet dodged, guys!
