College Wants Moms Arrested For Cheering Too Loudly at Graduation

In Mississippi, if you cheer at a graduation, you might catch a charge.

This week, according to WGN News, four people were asked to leave Senotobia High’s commencement ceremony, held at Mississippi Community College, for being too excited that their family members Lanarcia Walker and another grad named Lakaydra had taken the next steps in their lives.

“When she went across the stage I just called her name out ‘Lakaydra,’ just like that,” Ursula Miller told WREG. “I can understand they can escort me out of the graduation, but to say they are going to put me in jail for it, what else are they allowed to do?”

Now Miller, along with Lanarcia’s mother Linda Walker and two others, are facing charges of disturbing the peace, for which police have issued warrants for their arrests. These arrests come with a possible $500 bond—all for cheering at a graduation.

Whet.

MCC’s superintendent Jay Foster, who pressed charges, said he will have order at his graduation, which I guess means, he’ll arrest your mother if she cries tears of joy too loudly as well. Shout out to you Magnolia State superintendent Foster; you are what makes America great. And by great, I mean embarrassing and stupid.

DISCUSSION

This is a great opinion piece on the whole affair. From the article:

“Let’s get this straight: A white superintendent of a mostly white high school — in Mississippi — just had a warrant put out for the arrest of four black people for proudly cheering for their child for an achievement that only 69% of black kids in this state ever reach, thanks to a stacked deck built on years of structural racism and a white supremacist power structure.”
