Governor Chris Christie ordered a government shutdown in New Jersey on Saturday, over a budget disagreement that lead to the closure of all state-run parks and beaches for the Fourth of July weekend. This in itself seems like enough to cause an uprising from everyone in the tri-state area, but pictures of Christie and his family enjoying a desolate beach on Sunday are reeeeeaaalllly pushing it.

NJ.com reports that the photos were taken shortly before Christie headed to Trenton (in a helicopter) for a press conference about the government shut down, showing him with wife Mary Pat Christie and other family on Island Beach State Park, which was closed to the public. Reporters asked if he’d gotten any sun over the weekend, and he denied that he had:

When later told of the photo, Brian Murray, the governor’s spokesman, said: “Yes, the governor was on the beach briefly today talking to his wife and family before heading into the office.”

“He did not get any sun,” Murray added. “He had a baseball hat on.”

After being made aware of the pictures showing him enjoying a beautiful summer weekend on the beach that was denied to all his constituents, Christie admitted he’d be returning to the beach that night because it’s “where my family is sleeping, so that’s where I’ll sleep tonight. When I have a choice between sleeping with my family, and sleeping alone, I generally like to sleep where my family is.”

Christie claims that the beach house itself is separate from the park, and that the family is not using any state services. When reporters asked him if his family having access to the beach was fair, Christie replied, “Run for governor, and you can have a residence there.”

Chris Christie is really out Christie-ing himself this week.
