Chinese City Seeks Female Police Officers, Non-Sexies Need Not Apply

Latest

Crap employment notice from some dudes: Authorities in Chengdu, Sichuan province, China are looking to improve their city’s image by amassing a stable of new police officers. Applicants must be young, female, and attractive.

The career opportunity is not only initially discriminatory, it’s also very short in duration. All female police officers would be required to retire by age 26. The Guardian reports,

“Their main job is to present a good image so they have to be good looking,” said the human resources director of the law enforcement bureau. “And when they get older, they will get married and have children so it will not be convenient for them to do such work. Having them leave at 26 is for their sake.”

It’s so nice to know there are people all over the world who know what’s best for women. It really eliminates the pressure of thinking and making decisions.

Chinese law unfortunately does very little to protect women from this kind of discrimination, and hiring of pretty female job candidates over less attractive candidates is common in both the public and private sectors. Classified ads occasionally list measurement requirements for female job seekers, and until 2004, the Hunan province required female government employees to have “symmetrical breasts.”

We’ve got a long way to go, baby.
