Jaded, drunk, bitter, disillusioned… Charlize Theron's Mavis — the main character in Young Adult — is a kind of a girl after our own hearts. In this trailer, the character comes off as scheming and unlikeable, but with that glimmer of desperation and depression that can be all-too familiar. As seen in this trailer, the writing and direction of this dark comedy set the tone, but Theron's eyes — defiant, exhausted, slightly insane — convey how sometimes aging sucks.
Considering how much I hated that hipster fest known as Juno, you would think that I'd avoid a Jason Reitman + Diablo Cody collaboration like the plague, but yet, I am actually interested in this flick - and it has everything to do with Charlize Theron.
Not only am I interested in seeing her play a role that I've never seen her do, but it looks like she'll be able to elevate this past whatever Godawful hipster shit that Diablo Cody's writing seems to revel in.
