It’s been ten years since the original release of the film Step Up, and I for one welcome our new dance overlords Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum. They’ve already given us three successful sequels, and now the perfect Hollywood couple is producing a series in conjunction with YouTube Red.
The show will be YouTube’s “first full-fledged, big-budget original drama series,” according to Deadline. YouTube’s global head of original content Susanne Daniels says she’s a major Step Up Head:
“I’ve been a fan of the Step Up movies for years and always believed the films would translate into an awesome original series,” said Daniels. “We know that dance is a hugely successful global category on YouTube, so I’m excited to have a series rooted in such an enormously popular genre on our platform.”
Considering two thirds of the videos I watch on YouTube are dance compilations, she’s making a strong choice. This clip from the movie has almost 3 million views, and it’s just some guy named Chad spinning around:
The Tatums are executive producers on the project, teaming up with producers Adam Shankman, Jennifer Gibgot and Meredith Milton. The show is scheduled for production later this year and the release is set for 2017 as part of YouTube’s subscription service. It will, of course, focus on teens and DRAMA. I humbly request more Chad, please.
