Caitlyn Jenner got an earful from transgender activist and editor Ashlee Marie Preston on Sunday at the Trans Chorus event in Los Angeles, with Preston approaching Jenner to tell her exactly how she feels about the latter’s support of Donald Trump. The showdown came just a day after Trump officially banned trans people from serving in the military.
“It’s really fucked up that you continue to support somebody...that does everything with the military, that’s erasing our fucking community. And you support it,” Preston told Jenner following the end of a performance from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
Jenner stood largely silent as Preston berated her, initially tapping event co-chair Dena Williams on the shoulder in apparent hope that she’d be rescued. But Williams tried only passively to quiet Preston, who eventually turned her ire to Williams herself:
“As long as we continue to be the ones that are most impacted by the choices that you make, it is not OK,” she said. “We are complicit. Taking her money and doing all that? It makes us complicit. It goes against the mission,” Preston said. “How are we gonna fight anyone if she’s giving money to the people that are destroying us?” The event at which the confrontation took place was partially sponsored by a donation from Jenner.
“You don’t know me,” Jenner said in attempt to defend herself, a pretty laughable line considering her reality show origins.
“Yes I do!” Preston angrily responded. “You’re a fucking fraud and a fake.”
Jenner was an early Trump supporter who has since reversed her position, though her disavowal has been perceived as tepid at best. Exhibit A: Cruising around in her convertible earlier this month in her Make America Great Again hat, which just happened to be the first one she grabbed as she struck out for the golf course.
Preston, for her part, regrets nothing.
