Breastfeeding Photos Are Now Allowed on Facebook

After provoking anger for years with its bizarre “breastfeeding photos are inappropriate for the Internet” policy, Facebook has finally freed the nipple (on the condition that it is in or near the mouth of a breastfeeding child).

According to the Verge, Facebook quietly added the following statement to its help page three weeks ago:

Does Facebook allow photos of mothers breastfeeding?

Yes. We agree that breastfeeding is natural and beautiful and we’re glad to know that it’s important for mothers to share their experiences with others on Facebook. The vast majority of these photos are compliant with our policies.

Please note that the photos we review are almost exclusively brought to our attention by other Facebook members who complain about them being shared on Facebook.

A Facebook spokesperson confirmed to the Verge today that Zuckerberg & friends are totally chill with breastfeeding pix now, which is good news. “The vast majority of these photos are compliant with our policy,” quoth the spokesperson, implying that some will still be categorized as inappropriate. Sigh. Rome (which is the name I will give my carefree topless utopia one day) wasn’t built in a day, as they say.

No word on whether Facebook will continue censoring mastectomy pictures or whether the website will continue to let misogynistic, pro-rape content proliferate.
