Gather round bosom friends and pull out all of your puff sleeved dresses because Anne Shirley is coming back to television. Canada’s CBC announced today that they have greenlit a new adaptation of L.M. Montgomery’s beloved series, Anne of Green Gables.

The eight-episode first season will be released in 2017 and the CBC has tapped Emmy-winning Breaking Bad writer Moira Walley-Beckett to adapt the novels. Walley-Beckett said that she was attracted to the project because of the continued relevance of the Montgomery’s books:

“Anne’s issues are contemporary issues: feminism, prejudice, bullying and a desire to belong. The stakes are high and her emotional journey is tumultuous. I’m thrilled to delve deeply into this resonant story, push the boundaries and give it new life.”

CBC said that while the new series will follow the general trajectory of the novels, “it will also explore new territory” and the familiar characters will “experience original adventures.”

The network didn’t elaborate on what exactly “new territory” entailed, but ever since CBC first adapted the books in 1985, Megan Follows’ Anne Shirley has been imprinted on the minds of an entire generation of women. So maybe bringing in new adventures is a good move.
