Ariel Winter's Mother Says Her Daughter Needs to Quit 'Exposing Herself,' Ariel Winter Says Shove Off

After some nasty legal drama, Ariel Winter emancipated herself from her mother, Chrisoula Workman, last year. (Among other things, Winter had accused Workman of “vile name calling, personal insults about [her and her weight], attempts to ‘sexualize’ [a] minor, and deprivation of food.”) We hadn’t heard from Workman since last year, but she broke her silence this week in an interview with In Touch. It went over about as well as predicted.

After denying the host of abuse allegations made against her, Workman decided to change the subject and go back to things she’s good at: criticizing her daughter’s behavior and style:

“She needs to grow up. I would tell her to dress properly, be the beautiful person she is. I feel sad that she feels the need to expose herself when it’s not necessary. Ariel is smart, beautiful and talented. She is a legitimate actress. She does not need to do this. She is beautiful with her clothes on.”

Ariel’s response was short and sweet.

You hear that Chrisoula?! She’s “just fine.” Though Ariel Winter’s social media strategy of “do a thing you know haters will be outraged by, respond to the haters with a message of self-empowerment, be interviewed by tabloids about haters and self-empowerment” is borderline insufferable, I am absolutely rooting for her when it comes to publicly dragging her mother.

Coverage of this NME interview of Katy Perry may be a little premature, as it won’t be published in full until tomorrow, but this particular line—about how Perry doesn’t bemoan songwriter Max Martin for co-writing Swift’s shit-stirring single “Bad Blood”—did something for me.

“I’m not supposed to tell him what he can and can’t do. I’m very fair; I’m super-duper fair and I’m not one of those people who’s like, ‘You can’t do that because I don’t like that person’. Just, like, you do you, make your own choices... I’m not his mother.”

“I’m super-duper fair” is one of the most Katy Perry things Katy Perry has ever said.
