Archie, the red-headed teen of comic book fame, is getting his own television show. Variety reports that teen melodrama factory CW announced that it has ordered a pilot for the television show Riverdale, a show based on Archie and his famous friends.

Via Variety:

Based on the characters from Archie Comics, but set in present day, the project is a surprising and subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small town life ā€” the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdaleā€™s wholesome faƧade.

Okay, thatā€™s an idea ā€” an idea, however, that currently and shockingly overlooks the true hero of Archie Comics, Jughead Jones.

The show will be produced by Greg Berlanti, who practically owns the CW at this point. Berlantiā€™s other credits include Arrow, The Flash, and the truly terrible Legends of Tomorrow (sorry). If Berlantiā€™s other shows are any kind of indication, Riverdale will be packed with action, drama, and very good looking people who love CrossFit.

Riverdale appears to be part of a renewed interest in Archie Comics. Last year, Funny or Dieā€™s Adam McKay announced that he was writing a Broadway musical based on the perpetual teens.
