A Woman Action Star's Real Achilles Heel

Producer: Phoebe Bradford, Creative Producer: Eddie Costas

With Thor: Ragnarok hitting theaters November 3rd, Cate Blanchette’s Hela and Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie join the ranks of woman action stars who need a little lift to throw down.

You see, when the world needs saving, cinematic heroines still have to bring their A game—and by that I mean their most fashion-forward heels. Running from literal dinosaurs, hunting down mutant vampires, intricate sword fights, or an alien battle royale isn’t an excuse to let your ensemble suffer, ladies. Who wants to see a combat boot kick its way to victory? Gross!

If those ankles aren’t strong enough to bolt from danger in stilettos, fear not! Hollywood has cooked up a fun alternative: the wedge heeled boot (see: Wonder Woman, Æon Flux, or any of the Marvel Universe women). It has all of the look of a flat shoe with none of its functionality!

So forget your “Katniss Everdeens” or your “Furiosas” with their sensible footwear and noble causes—the only thing you need to kick ass is a pair of pumps.

That was something I really appreciated about “Atomic Blonde,” in all of the really insane physical stuff they kept her in a flat. I’m a shoe freak and it’s always bothered me continuity wise when you have a character in a stiletto and then suddenly she has to do something cool and the shoe changes. It’s like...commit, or realize that you’re being impractical folks.
