At the boarding school I went to in Australia, which was in the bush (i.e the countryside), we had a mama wombat and her babies living underneath our house. One day there was a bushfire approaching, and we were scared the wombats would get hurt. I remember 5 14-year old girls trying to herd a family of wombats to the fire shelter - they came a bit of the way, but then refused. I guess they were safer in their burrow (and actually the fire missed us). After a while the mother wombat would be used to us, and if one of us sitting outside the house reading, she'd come and sit there making weird grunting noises and admiring the view from the hill our house was on. Everyone was too scared to touch her, though.

While I find these furry creatures adorable I'm always scared that they have rabies. My old boss was bitten by bat once while walking her dog and had to get rabies shot.

Very well. You know I abhor vulgarity, but it must be pointed out, and I see that this burden has fallen to me:

WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON IN THAT DUDE'S CROTCHULAR REGION? Because while I think it's sweet that the man loves his wombat, I'm frankly alarmed at the implication that he really loves his wombat. It you take my meaning.

@Trulymadlyme: I was thinking this very thing, so I looked it up on Wikipedia, and it turns out, no, you cannot domesticate a wombat:
"They can be awkwardly tamed in a captive situation, and even coaxed into being patted and held, possibly becoming quite friendly. Many parks, zoos and other tourist set-ups across Australia have wombats on public display, and they are quite popular. However, their lack of fear means that they may display acts of aggression if provoked, or if they are simply in a bad mood. Its sheer weight makes a charging wombat capable of knocking an average-sized man over, and their sharp teeth and powerful jaws can result in severe wounds. One naturalist, Harry Frauca, once received a bite 2 cm (0.79 in) deep into the flesh of his leg—through a rubber boot, trousers and thick woollen socks (Underhill, 1993)."

@Intern Katy: Wombats can also cause a small car to roll if said small car hits said wombat.

Wombats are just packed solid muscle. Wanna know how they defend against predators who are chasing them? They run into a burrow and when the predator chases after them, into the burrow, the wombat will use its butt to crush the predator's skull against the top of the burrow.
