Yup, Jennifer Garner Is With Child

  • Jennifer Garner's Alias spydaddy, Victor Garber, spills that Jen and Ben have a bun in the oven. "She is five months pregnant," he says. They are very happy." [Us Magazine]
  • Is Uma Thurman knocked up? [Rush & Molloy]
  • People, this is crazy but the Michael Lohan paternity test (remember Ashley Kaufman?) has been delayed. Last week a commenter said that on Maury they can get it done in like 2 days. But apparently the testing company in this case won't process the test without a court order. Michael's going to see if he can get one. [Yahoo News]
  • Keith Urban says being a new dad is "pure bliss" and that he and Nicole Kidman are "absolutely overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and well wishes we are receiving." [People]
  • A settlement is likely in the Britney/Kevin custody case — meaning it won't go to trial, thank Zeus. [People]
  • This just in! The case has been settled. Kevin will get sole legal and physical custody. Britney will have visitation rights. Pending court approval. [Yahoo News, People]

"Ordering" An Abortion Online: The Choice When You Don't Really Have A Choice

The BBC is reporting that a website called Women On Web is making abortion-inducing drugs just a mouse-click away. In a British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology survey of 200 women who used the site to order aborificients, 11% went on to need a surgical procedure — either because the drugs didn't complete the abortion or because of excessive bleeding. Why didn't the women seek medical help in the first place? Shouldn't a woman undergo something as (possibly) traumatic to the body (and psyche) as an abortion with the aid of a medical professional? Probably. But the women who use Women On Web live in Northern Ireland, Thailand, or one of 70 other countries where a safe, supervised abortion is restricted. More »

Pregnant man Thomas Beatie gave birth to baby girl today via Cesarean natural birth! Congrats! • Two prominent female activists from the group Women and Men of Zimbabwe Arise have been detained for 6 weeks for peacefully protesting Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. • A Canadian doctor and Holocaust survivor who fought to legalize abortion in Canada will receive the country's highest civilian honor despite condemnation from anti-choice advocates. • A new art exhibit aims to break Western depictions of Muslim and Arab women by highlighting female artists (Muslim and non-Muslim) from the Islamic world. Knocked-up chicks are apparently experiencing the infamous odd-food lust much more today than they were in generations past. A new study shows that 30% more pregnant women are craving weird shit than they were 50 years ago. And yet, a third of these cravings were found to be not for food, specifically, but for "texture," with everything from toothpaste to coal being the object of desire. Says Fiona Ford of the University of Sheffield's Centre for Pregnancy Nutrition, "Ice is good for satisfying a craving for texture, and a non-toxic way, rather than chewing plaster off the walls, or chewing match heads, or some of the other things we have had." Um, yeah. [BBC]

It must be sexy pregnant lady day today or something. Nina Hartley has announced the release of her latest DVD Nina Hartley's Guide to Great Sex During Pregnancy. Hartley, a former nurse, said, "There's a real curiosity and a lot of misinformation on sex during pregnancy. I felt it was time to set the record straight ... and I believe the public is ready to accept that a pregnant woman can be a sexual, desirable woman." [AVN]

Pregnant Man Thomas Beatie Appears On Oprah

Thomas Beatie, who made headlines last week as the first man to become pregnant, sat down with Oprah today to discuss his condition. Beatie, an FTM, has been legally married to his wife Nancy for five years, and the couple wanted a child together. (Nancy had a hysterectomy due to endometriosis some 20 years ago, and is unable to get pregnant.) Other than the fact that Beatie has had gender identity issues, and is now a pregnant man, he and Nancy seem like a completely normal couple, and not the weirdo hoaxsters portrayed by the media for the past week and a half. Beatie's Ob/Gyn was also on the show to discuss how her patient's past hormone therapy will affect the child he's carrying. Clip above.

Maybe A Pregnant Bride Is A Symbol Of Hope

Dear Jamie Lynn Spears, Angelina Jolie and other unmarried moms-to-be: Tracey Wilkinson feels your pain. According to today's Telegraph, the 31-year-old opened a store in Chiswik, west London called Expectant Bride. There, one can find a full range of wedding dresses designed to accommodate the growing belly of a pregnant woman. Wilkinson, mother of two, explains: "I got married when I was seven months pregnant and found it very difficult getting a maternity bridal dress to fit. You can't just wear a large sized normal dress as you look like you're wearing a tent. The dresses I sell look like a normal bridal gown but they are discreetly made to fit a bump." Plus, she claims her business is "doing really well." But Anne Widdecombe, a Member of Parliament, says: "I think this shop is an extremely sad sign of the times." But isn't a knocked up bride a symbol of hope? Because at least she's getting married? Something about a pregnant bride says, "We're going to try and make this work." More »

57-year-old Brit Susan Tollefsen was terrified because she found a large, solid mass in her abdomen. She went to the doctor, fearing ovarian cancer, only to be told that she was seven months preggers. "I was lying on the examination table thinking, 'I'm going to die' when the sonographer turned round to me and said 'Congratulation. My initial reaction was to think, 'What a terrible way to tell me I've got ovarian cancer.' When he then said, 'You're pregnant' I was literally speechless," Tollefsen told reporters. She's getting a Caesarean next week. Here's a picture of Susan with her boyfriend, Nick Mayer, who is a sprightly 46. Mazel you crazy kids! [UPI via Daily Mail]

The Brave New World Of Gender Nonconformity: Pregnant Men

The concept of gender in mainstream culture is becoming less conservative by the day. Of course it's not like being at Smith, but when Benny Ninja can vogue his little butt off on a graffiti-ed stage with a bunch of drag queens during prime time and no one bats an eyelash, you know things have come pretty far since Leave it to Beaver. One of the last truly gendered events is pregnancy — unless you're Thomas Beatie. Thomas is a man, and he's knocked up. Well more specifically, Thomas is biologically a woman, but he decided to go through gender reassignment. Getting down to the nuts (heh) and bolts of it, Thomas took testosterone and had his breasts removed, but he kept the vagina. His partner, Nancy, is unable to bear children, and because the pair really wanted a biological baby, Thomas went off his bi-monthly testosterone injections and after a few harrowing attempts, is now expecting a baby girl in July. London's Balletlorent dance company is staging an original ballet in which professional ballet dancers and pregnant women will be performing side by side. "This is another development of a long-held wish to mix up the different physical types in my choreography. The shape of people changes the way they move, and I like that very much... You can't get a 25-year-old, size 8 ballet dancer type body to move with the weight, the gravitas or the sheer cheerful spirit of a pregnant woman," says artistic director Liv Lorent. Adds Lynn Campbell, a "birth therapist" who has been brought on as an adviser: "Culturally we don't always have the words to celebrate the beauty of pregnancy, and although people are often fascinated by it, they don't know how to express that, so the say things like "Aren't you big!". [Reuters]

Nearly one-third of women had C-sections in 2005, a major jump from the number in 1995, when only one-fifth of women delivered babies by Caesarean. The study was done by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and also said that the sharpest decline in natural birth was from women who had already given birth to first child through C-section. Another possible cause for the decline is, like Christina Aguilera, women in America are just afraid of getting their junk torn up by pushing a kid out. Doctors definitely took an X-acto to X-tina! [UPI, Daily Mail]

A new study has found that women who give birth to boys are more likely to suffer post-partum depression than those who had daughters. Researchers from Université Nancy, France, have also found that women who had boys reported lower "quality of life scores" in 70% of cases compared with women who had baby girls — regardless of whether they suffered from post-partum depression. The scientists say further research is needed to find out why this happens. Think it has something to do with testosterone levels? [Telegraph, EurekAlert]

What A Tangled InterWeb We Weave So this woman in Germany put herself in an online sex auction. Six different men won the contest, and had sex with her. Guess what? The chick is pregnant, and doesn't know who the father is. She asked the operator of Web site to release the identities of the dudes — she only knew their screen names — but the company cited a confidentiality clause in its terms and conditions. D'oh! Well, the fraulein brought legal action and the court ruled in her favor. So, happy ending. Kind of. Poor kid. [Reuters]

This Week In Tabloids: Britney's Secret Wedding, Angelina's Crazy Trip

Every Wednesday, we do Midweek Madness, the game in which we weather the storm of celebrity tabloids, looking for a ray of sunshine...or at least a good bit of gossip. This week, Britney Spears and Angelina Jolie both "win" 2 covers; the last cover is dominated by poor, mournful Michelle Williams. Intern Sharon donned her parka and snow boots to help us scrape the "news" from In Touch, Star, Us, Life & Style and OK!; details after the jump. More »
