I...think this is fun? I would totally go there? Gardens + sexy art = yay to me, I guess.
I mean, if it were my park (WHICH WOULD BE AWESOME), I would do add some stuff. I would put in some sexy man/lady statues in all sorts of shapes and sizes and like, a wall of cock and a wall of pussy! Casts of lots of different people's junk. It would be awesome! And a wall of breasts! Male breasts, chick breasts, LOTS OF BREASTS! Maybe even one with a baby suckling.
What about sexy topiaries? Who doesn't like a nice shrubbery? And of course, some GLBT couples in all formulas and configurations. I would love a pair of male and female statues that you came at from behind and when you walked past, if you looked back you would realize they were the opposite sex of what you assumed from the back (i.e. transgender)! That would be awesome!
The issue here you miss (perhaps by not being an Asiaphile) is that this park is on Jeju Island. In China at least (my area of "expertise"), there's a common problem of sexualizing the national minorities and fringe cultures, to make the Han Chinese appear more "civilized."Jeju Island (I'm pretty sure) is like Hawaii for Koreans, except that, because it's "less civilized" as well as tropical, it's seen as a place of more relaxed sexuality/sexual morals. #nsfw
I hate when the 2 women 1 man situation is presented solely as a male fantasy, as it completely marginalizes bi-sexual woman for whom this encounter is their only way of expressing both sides of their sexuality at the same time. #nsfw
@Keep it cool: This is true-- the 2F 1M scenario is absolutely NOT only a male fantasy-- and I agree it's important for heteros to remember that. #nsfw
@BabyJane: Clamos: The Clams of Fate
The Clamtom of the Opera
The Wicker Clam
The Clam of the Baskervilles
In the case of the last title, I'm envisioning a giant, bloodthirsty clam stalking the moors surrounding the estate of the wealthy Baskerville family. #nsfw
@BabyJane: The Invisible Clam
Invasion of the Clammy Snatchers (preferable to "clammy snatches," natch) Zombieclam
Peeping Clam (a more severe discretion than the nipple slip) #nsfw
I think its interesting that Love Land only seems to have statues of white people. That to me seems like a bigger problem than the objectification (which some aspects of sex is about objectifying, women do it to men, men do it to women (admittedly is more of a problem with the objectificatino of women in mainstream culture), or male domination as there seems to be a more variety in the types of partners, genders, domination. But the whiteness of the statues in a Korean (right?) amusement park is more problematic. #nsfw
Are those houses behind the shrubbery in photo 4? Must be a little surreal in winter when the hedges thin out.
@badmutha - Korea's attitude toward things sexual is interesting; on one hand, prostitution is a huge part of the culture (a few years back the Korean Feminist Association estimated that between 500,000 to a little over a million Korean women are involved in prostitution, a huge percentage in a country of a little over 70 million). On the other, the societal stigma for engaging in premarital intercourse is still strong, especially for women, as is the censure directed at single mothers. Attitudes are changing among the younger set but as @hortense alluded to in her post, during my time there I found it to be very masculine-focused.
@heykoukla - Totally; also who knew this would be such a hit with middle-aged Korean women? Just judging from the pics the average age of attendees looked to be about 35.
Have to say, I'm rather a fan of the 'penis gift' sculpture, and since the topic is up, you can probably argue that this objectifies male genitalia just as much as it does women. Or, that it's not really a case of objectification at all. #nsfw
@I Like Pickle: Thank you, these are interesting. It looks like the large woman/little man sculptures are a series, or at least a triptych. I don't think it helps that in the third one he gets away. It looks like #10 is also part of a series, and there's a very interesting penis garden.
I would be interested to see something like this in this country. Most of these are rather thought-provoking. #nsfw
The penis gift sculpture you linked is photographed at such an angle that it looks more like a faceless "little Dutch boy" to me than a penis. The head looks like a hat, and the bow looks like a decorative collar.
I feel a little sorry for the lady at the far right on picture 16. I think she's just spent a good hour at Love Land having to pretend she's enjoying herself when all she wanted to do was check out some formal gardens and buy a mug at the gift shop. #nsfw
Can someone in the know comment about (South) Korea's attitude toward sexuality in general? If I had to think of an Asian country off the top of my head that would have this, S. Korea would not be it. But then again, I know nothing. Enlightenment plz? #nsfw
I think it's not really accurate to say that the men are specifically in "control" in a bunch of the statues you say that of. The size differentials are one thing, and weird, but the threesome isn't inherently about control--one woman is solely pleasuring the man, but the man is also solely pleasuring the other woman. The women aren't held down or being dominated in any way--even if you think of oral sex as inherently about control (which I don't), it's going both ways. I think the 2F 1 M fantasy is definitely more of a male fantasy, but that's different than control. Plus, there are a bunch of female-centric statues--the masturbation one, and the one with 3 women that you love, and the clam one, which I saw as a non-exhibitionist masturbation statue, one that IS very woman-centered.
But yes, the one with the large woman and emaciated man is HORRIBLE, as are the dismembered bodies, particularly the buried one.
